The truth is that much of the skepticism comes from those who have never been to Cartagena. Ironically, visitors who experience the city firsthand leave with nothing but praise for its vibrant culture, stunning beaches and welcoming atmosphere.

How safe is Medellin?

This is always the first question on people’s minds and the most common question among travelers.

It’s no secret that Medellin was infamous in the 80s and 90s for Pablo Escobar, but times have changed. City leaders use of social programs and tough policies helped drive crime out of the city’s most impoverished neighborhoods. The first step towards any city’s long-term recovery.

The city has its rough areas. However, just like NYC, Miami, and LA have a few marginalized sectors, Medellin also has them. These places are a bit dangerous, but we will never take you there without some type of security.

Just steer clear of flashy jewelry (same advice for 90% of the cities in the world), and you will be fine. There is a fairly large community of ex-pats living in the Poblado neighborhood (the safest and best in Medellin) that will tell you to avoid acting stupid, and Medellin will take you in as one of its own.

Best time to take a trip to Medellin

Second, for Medellin FAQs, when is the best time to take a trip to Medellin?. The city is known as the city of eternal spring due to its amazing weather year-round, so you’re always looking at the mid-70s.

It all depends on what type of traveler you are. I, for one, hate crowds, so the Medellin flower festival is out (more on this next paragraph). I also don’t recommend the week of Easter (for 2020 it will be April 5th–11th) due to it being one of the most famous weeks in terms of Colombians vacationing (fewer people out).

What’s the weather like in Medellin, and what clothing should I bring?

Medellin is known for its amazing weather; they even call it “The Land of Eternal Spring." It is known for its lukewarm weather, averaging around 72 degrees F all year round. We do have rain from time to time, so we suggest bringing a light jacket and light clothing.

What is the flower festival?

The Medellin flower festival is our biggest tourist attraction of the year. Thousands of people from all over the world visit Medellin for two weeks, where parades and concerts take place on a daily basis. Not a fan of crowds or elevated costs? Stay away during this time. Next year, the Medellin flower festival will take place from July 31st to August 9th.

December is great, but it is usually tough for bachelor parties to be set up during the holidays. In conclusion, any time that isn’t the first two weeks of April or the first two weeks of August, you’ll be fine.

What to do in Medellin?

After wrapping up a 3-week trip to Europe, I realized how amazing Medellin really is. As a city that’s on the rise and is known for its nice people and beautiful women (sorry, Europe), Medellin is a paradise for bachelor party groups.

There are activities such as paragliding in Medellin, ATV tours in Medellin, helicopter tours in Medellin, and jet skiing. If you’re not into adventure, there are cultural excursions to once dangerous neighborhoods (think of Chernobyl but with murals of Pablo Escobar). Lastly, the food is amazing, and locals are always happy to see foreigners do away with stereotypes and visit their city.

Visit the colorful town of Guatape, where you have options like a coffee tour of Guatape, a Guatape boat tour, or a Guatape helicopter tour. You can stay in beautiful Guatape hotels and hit up the can’t-miss Comuna 13 neighborhood with our graffiti tour of Medellin. Take a look at the city with the Medellin city tour, walk around Parque Lleras, stop by La Isla Medellin and Fase 2 strip clubs, and take a 2-hour ATV Medellin tour up the mountain.

Margarita was beyond phenomenal. Her knowledge, her energy, her humor she didn’t just guide us, she brought every place to life. Whether we were exploring **El Peñón de Guatapé**, walking through **Comuna 13**, visiting **Alto del Chocho**, seeing the waterfall, or boating through **Guatapé**, she made sure we understood the history, the culture, and the heart behind everything we experienced. And she did it all while keeping us laughing the entire time. She was attentive, patient (especially with certain cousins who may or may not have stopped midway up the rock 😅), and so genuinely caring. You can tell she loves what she does, and it shows in every detail. Sebastian and Cali were incredible drivers . They were professional, safe, kind, and always ready with a smile. We felt completely taken care of every single day. And Beto as copilot? The best addition ever. Getting to meet him added such a personal and heartfelt touch. It truly felt like being welcomed by family. From Sandra bravely riding the horse, to meeting llamas, to shopping for beautiful ceramics and earrings in El Retiro, to enjoying delicious local Colombian food including chicharon, fresh juices, and of course the famous buñuelos every bite was authentic and amazing.   Great VIP experience with amazing driver, fun activities, but mixed hosting
Medellín VIP Review Our group booked Medellín VIP for a full experience and we did a lot during the week. The ATV tour, coffee tour, paintball, boat ride in Guatapé, massages and Comuna 13 were all great. Margarita was a very pleasant guide and kept everything organized. Our driver Carlos was one of the best parts of the trip. He was always on time, polite, professional and made sure we were comfortable. He took care of us from start to finish and we appreciated him a lot. We also had a private chef, Jessie, who cooked amazing meals. Her arepas were the best we had on this trip and she was always kind. The only mixed experience we had was with the VIP hosts. We started with Juan Andrés and it did not go well. We told him we wanted to go to local spots with live music, but he kept trying to take us to rooftops, upscale restaurants or lookout points. When we insisted on local places, he always had excuses. He also showed up late more than once and left us alone for long periods of time. One night he showed up late, left again on his motorcycle, came back an hour later, and stayed at a separate table. Later that night at La 70 he left without finishing his shift. That same night there was a fight at the bar and if would have been there the fight would have probably been avoided. The next day we had a different host, Axel, but nobody notified us of the change. Axel was much better. He understood the type of places we wanted to visit, took us to local spots and got along well with everyone in our group. He even should the 20 year olds how to dance 'perreo' One thing I wish we had known is that hosts’ meals, drinks, entrances and other expenses are not included. It would have been helpful to know that in advance so we could plan for it. Overall we enjoyed the activities, the guide, the chef and especially our driver. There were some issues with our first host, but the rest of the team gave us a good experience in Medellín.

We’re from Australia and if you’re going to Medellín, book with my boy Felipe from VIP Medellín! I’m telling you, he’s the plug and treats you like one of his homies from day one. He gave us the full nightlife experience everything from top-tier bars to the best clubs in the city. This man knows how to bring the party to you, no question. He started us off with dinner at a 5-star steakhouse that had insane views over the city food and service were immaculate. After that, we hit up a few local spots, rooftop bars, and lounges, each one better than the last. The whole night felt effortless because Felipe had everything locked in. What I really liked was he wasn’t just a guide, he made it feel like you’re rolling around Medellín with a local friend. He showed us where to get the best massages, told us the history of Medellín, answered all my random questions, and made sure we were safe and taken care of the whole time. He also helped translate since we don’t speak Spanish, which made everything way smoother. Honestly, it was one of the best nights I’ve ever had.   Had a fantastic experience with Medellin VIP. They helped me book drivers, a boat rental, and restaurant reservations. Drivers were more expensive than ubering would have otherwise been, but its worth it just for the ease and peace of mind. Easy communication with everyone via whatsapp.

We had Sandy for our VIP concierge service, and he was the man. Got us anything we needed for our trip, and showed us where to go and where not to go. Took us out for an awesome dinner at a rooftop restaurant and several bars and nightclubs after, was a hell of a night out.
