We’ve hosted a plethora of clients over the years that visit Colombia with their families. Small groups are made up of some children that are looking to explore Colombia as a family.
These groups bring their younger ones and want to get a taste of one of the world’s most popular tourist destinations. But it isn’t Colombia’s luxuries or 5-star resorts that lure visitors during New Years. It’s the country’s authenticity.

December Lights and New Years
December in Colombia is beautiful. There is a tradition that dates back to the 1960s where EPM (Empresas Publicas de Medellin) decorated the city in December. EPM is the country’s largest utility company. Using taxpayer’s money decided to put together Christmas decorations the likes of which had never been seen before.
This tradition is ongoing and part of our country’s culture. The lights then spread to other parts of the country and this year, Cartagena is no exception.
The themes tend to be flowers, birds, native customs, and even phrases that set regions apart.
New Years in Cartagena 2022
From horse carriages to historical landmarks, sunsets, and candlelight dinners, Cartagena during new years has it all.
You can bring your little ones to walk the historical Centro Historico, watch the sunset at Cafe del Mar. Then get to the hotel or Airbnb and take a nap before getting ready for dinner at one of the top hotels in the country.
The Santa Teresa Hotel or Santa Clara host epic New Years’ dinners complete with after-parties for the whole family.
New Years in Medellin 2022
Medellin is a tad more traditional when it comes to New Years. But if you find yourself in the city of eternal spring, there are a few places worth checking out.

You have the option of a traditional dinner during the early evening and then upgrading to an all-out new years party upstairs.

Bringing your kids along for a new years trip to Colombia is safe and recommended. There are of course places to steer clear of in both Medellin and Cartagena. But this shouldn’t hinder you from having a great time.
